Eagle Lake Fishing Report….May Opener

My Eagle Lake fishing report…May, 2012

Another GREAT trip this year to Vermilion Bay Lodge.   Fishing was maybe a little tougher than years past due to fish being in both shallow and deep water.

Usually in May the ice has just gone out and the fish are easier to locate.  This year they were all over and not schooled like previous years.

We had walleyes to 25″ and Northerns to 32″.   Perch galore.   Even had some musky action,  boating one at 39″ and an encounter with a 50″er on the last day of the trip.  She latched on a northern pike I was reeling in and got to fight it for a good 5 minutes,  bringing  her up to the boat several times before she had enough and just let go just under the surface.

Weather this year was also up and down though no snow but temps in the 70’s and 80’s at the start of the week and ending around 50 on the last day.

Most of the walleye came on jig and minnow but did catch lot on crank baits. Northerns mostly coming on Rapalas and other cranks.

Lake trout fishing had us catching them on Hot n Tots.

Want to thank Gord and Susanne for another GREAT trip. Your hospitality is always GREAT!!!

Here are some of the pics from this year!!!

  1. It’s good to see Gord getting in on the perch action. I suspect that is not what he was looking for. I am puzzled by the shot of the pike with the fish carcass attached to the lure. I am assuming you interrupted his lunch hour?

  2. Perchmaster,

I have observed fish burping first hand. I have even been known to have a good conversation with at talkative sheephead/drum. This week however, I heard about a guy that developed a smart phone application that replicates the sound of farting herring. While humans typically use their flatulence to ward off other humans, it turns out herring fart to communicate. Seriously….do a google search. This might fully explain the sometimes quite Mike at VBL. It could be that he has just been trying to carry on a conversation in fish language? If I can find the time, I will do a post on this. I believe the inventor is the same guy that came up with Dr. Juice.

  3. Great! Looking photographs!
    The muskie is real nice!
It’s good to know all “hell” can suddenly break loose while fishing on “the Big eagle” when a muskie shows – up and starts chewing on what you’re trying to catch.
I m glad to see Gord observing safety rules and wearing a personal floatation vest.
I wish one day, to return to Vermilion Bay on Eagle Lake in North Western Ontario…

  4. It’s interesting to note the tail fin of a burbot coming from the mouth of the pike .
I guess a LURE with similar colour and action would catch pike at this time of the year.

Testimonials

This is a first class resort located on Vermillion Bay on Eagle Lake. The cabins are very clean and well kept. The boats are new with new motors and are in great shape. The owner will also clean your fish for you after your day on the water. Make no mistake the fishing on Eagle Lake is world class.

The Lodge is owned by Gord and Susanne Bastable who will make you feel welcome and before you know it you feel like family. They are the best of hosts. The atmosphere is low key and laid back leading to a great vacation.

This is my 19th year of enjoying the hospitality of the lodge and i can’t think of going anywhere else on Eagle Lake.
