July Report, 2024

July has flown by with a “Walleye Madness Week” conclusion….

The above photo is entitled “Eyeballs”………does this sum up the Walleye Madness awards night and pot luck dinner? Nice looking prizes!

Some of the participants and their “thanks for trying” consolation award…

Mark, who needed a clean shirt, with his 3rd place award for “other species”…

A couple of new VBL jackets for father / son Meyer team on their tied spot for biggest other species……41 1/2-3/4 ” muskies!

Ralph in 3rd place for the biggest released walleye! Carrying on with the eyeball theme, I’ve added them to enhance my photo…….

“Weasel” takes away the VBL cribbage board for his second place winning walleye….

Al Haggart the first place winner! Going old school with a wooden map and ditching the GPS!

Backtracking to the beginning of July and some of the goings on….

July was characterized by good water levels, better weather that ranged from very pleasant to scorching hot, and a walleye bite that was all over the map……

Walleyes on “five of diamond” spoons……it was a thing while the walleye were targeting molting crayfish in the shallows. 11 feet of water off of weed edges seemed to be a pattern, which wasn’t intuitive during hot sunny days. A lot of folk were running around looking in deep spots and totally missing out this bite.

Dennis with a couple of those weed walleyes…

Some big bass too were chowing down on crayfish…

One of the characteristics of this season so far is the fish seem to be more scattered than usual. It seems as I write this some of the lake humps are finally starting to come to life.

Always great to see young kids connecting with fish at the end of their lines….

“Weasel” with his signature hoodie posing for the camera.

July seemed to be a productive month for the musky anglers……

The Meyer boys had a good week with 8 muskies boated, big and small…..

Including a relatively rare tiger…..

So there you have it. If you’ve been laying in the weeds waiting for August then now is your time!

This colorful fish looks more like it belongs in the Amazon, but in reality it is a very pretty Pumpkinseed.

August is here and the fish seem to be on the move to offshore humps and drop-offs, but knowing those wily walleye I’m sure they are still lurking near weeds as well. Stay tuned for the next report and all will be revealed!

      1. Andy is totally unapologetic about all the VBL fishing awards he has legitimately won. But for him, one more will never be enough. And his home is quite sturdy, with a specially reinforced trophy room large enough for many more awards. If you ever come down to the Madison area again, you should stop by to see it–pretty dazzling I must say.

  1. Nicely done as per usual đź‘Ź, great pictures, commentary up to standards and now for August. Thanks Gord for the entertaining read.

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
