Ice Out Contest: Update #1

April 2, 2025

It’s been 2 years since the snowmachines came out of storage (side effects of being in Mexico!) Vintage Bear Cat circa year 2000, with even more vintage operator. Somehow ’00 doesn’t seem that long ago, till you do the math.

Some evening walleye action…

Yesterday…..on the hunt for giant lake trout. This one needs to grow.

Not a giant, but tonight’s dinner.

Getting bigger.

Baby burbot.

So while it’s technically spring, as you can see winter seems to be hanging on. Here’s some pics from today as we are getting pelted with snow…

Streams are starting to open up.

The eagles are already back nesting and one lonely gull was sighted yesterday.

Still haven’t made your ice out guess yet? Operators are standing by @ vbay@drytel.net. Good luck, stay calm and watch for the signs……

  1. These photos do me a world of good. Someday before I am horizontal, I would love to try catching some of those elusive burbot through the ice. I have only caught one up there.

  2. Hi Gord…I’m working through the mathematical, physical and spiritual calculations for ice out 2025. Some questions may arise as this work is complicated. Are the operators available 24/7.

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
