June ’26 Fishing Report…

Another June come and gone! Water temps were up and down with the changing weather……….one week hot and the next cold making the fish and the fishermen crazy. As we end the month with a blitzgrieg of mayflies let’s review some of the fishing (and related) action…

Bob Swanson with a good looking pike …

Noelle Swanson some nice walleye.

“No L” showing old dad how to do it!

Bob seems to be taking it seriously…..cheer up Bob, you can catch a big one too……Or is it a premonition of things to come?.

Thatta boy……….a few shots of medication to make things better!

Whoops! Good thing Dr. Gord’s office is always open for free hook removals………and moral support.

There’s a serious fish fry about to happen in cabin 6!

Speaking of fish fry’s, at VBL our Sunday night fish fry is a big hit. After so many years of doing it we sometimes forget how good it really is! Locally caught Eagle Lake whitefish picked up fresh each week………this isn’t your pre-breaded Vietnamese talapia we’re serving!

Here we have the Mother-in-Law Gerda staking claim to the fried potatoes………..no more seasoning!

Susanne with prototype Musky cookies…….made with real musky!

June was a good month for some wildlife sightings!

Snapping turtles like this monster and the less hazardous painted turtles were out and about……some on the road and generally wandering around looking for a place to lay their eggs……

This smaller snapper was at the kitchen door…….

There’s never a shortage of these fellows….

An unusual black bear……this one a cinnamon color variation.

There’s been a number of moose sightings this year…….a good sign for sure!

While not considered “wild-life” Stella has chased her fair share of them……moose, fox, racoon, groundhog (a favorite), beaver, and various other small rodents. She seems content these days to ride shotgun while I pick up garbage at the cabins. Very stoic in her posture.

The “bass of June” are an attraction for many of our anglers……especially the Tennesse boys….

You’d think your fishing partner would tell you that there’s something wrong with your face…..nice bass though!

Got Milk?

Is the smile for the bass or his partner’s face?

Graham Taylor….the man, the myth, the legend………..never the winner but always a runner up………seen here boldly going where no man has gone before……

Undeniable proof that he can catch walleye. Way to go!

A dandy 29 incher from the last days in June……screw the mayflies!

….and a 27 1/2…..

Well, there you have it……June in a pictorial nutshell. One observation as it applies to walleye fishing during the mayfly season: The walleye can be caught but often their patterns and timing are constantly changing. One technique that worked consistently for the Triplett group this past week was the old time “Little Joe spinner”…….basically a weight followed by a rig consisting of a spinner and hook tipped with a minnow. Back trolled it worked well when other tactics did not. Live and learn…..that’s fishing.

One young member of the “Little Joe” gang………proud of her boat towel!

End of June and Gerda gets to go home to southern Ontario and away from the biting insects who find her most desirable!

Adios fellow pescadorios……..bring on July and keep on smelling damn good!
