While it may be the end of March, it still seems like we are in the dead of winter here at Vermilion Bay Lodge. There are signs though that Spring fishing is not far away.
An axe emerges from the snow, apparently left in a chunk of firewood down by the fire-pit.
It’s also nearing the time when conditions right for getting into the back-country by snow-machine are fading. Time to put some gas for the portage lake boats in place. On the agenda for today….Clearwater Lake, McGregor Lake, Caribou Lake, and Long Lake. Having the gas in place means Spring fishing for lake trout, walleye, smallmouth bass and pike is much easier.
Back in Caribou Lake a shoreline boulder makes a good perch for Susanne. You can be sure the smallmouth bass are not far away. Spring fishing back in this remote lake for smallmouth bass and pike is a real treat. Catch and release…..always.
Meanwhile, in Long Lake a boat ramp takes shape. Long Lake is an area we hardly ever fish. While we know there are pike that inhabit these waters, we are not sure how big they grow back here. Perhaps Spring fishing in 2011 will solve this riddle.

Thank you very much for making my get a way week so enjoyable. Dan and I had a great time. You and Susanne should be commended on how clean and well maintained your cabins and lodge are. I will recommend you to anyone that is looking to go to Canada fishing and I look forward to the time I can come back.
