Preparing for Walleye Fishing 2015!

It’s the dead of winter. Our boats hibernate and our walleye fishing gear collects dust.  As you throw another log on the fire consider this… “Do I need to add fuel to my walleye catching abilities?”  Of course you don’t!  You are a walleye master.  A legend in your own mind!  You’ve always had success fishing the same way, in the same depths, at the same speed.

It’s easy to reach a point where we are lulled into a false sense of security about our walleye techniques.  The bad days we encounter are passed off as “Well, they don’t bite all the time”, or “The conditions have turned them off”.  What if I said “The fish are not the problem….YOU are!”  Maybe that’s a bit harsh, but one thing I’ve learned over the years is that the moment you think the fishing has shut down, someone will come along to prove you wrong.  The biggest contributor to failure is the lack of tools in your fishing repertoire.  When jig fishing fails, and all you do is jig fish, you fail too.  It’s time to consider some of the other methods to catch walleye and plan on having them added to your arsenal for 2015.  It will give you more options and hopefully more success on your next Canadian walleye adventure.

To help get you started check out the walleye fishing tips on the Vermilion Bay Lodge website.  You’ll also find tips for all other species as well.  Don’t stop there though!  Visit other fishing websites…they can be full of good information and new techniques.  Fellow angler Gord Pyzer has some great ideas…I would highly recommend checking his blog site out.

There are many other methods that deserve your attention….pick a few that you find interesting and have fun trying them out this summer.  Best of luck, and may you find the fuel for your fire!

  1. Very true, Gord. I should stop being such a snob and try LIVE nightcrawlers sometime. For those looking to try some deep trolling with crank baits, check out my post from a few years ago.

  2. Gord…Your post got me motivated. I stayed up late last night cleaning my walleye snells and spinner harnesses. These are now air-drying in the basement and will be ready for Spring.
