June 21st…Happy Father’s Day!

We have a guest!

Yes, it’s well into June and our first guest has arrived….Chris from Alberta. Apparently having the camp to yourself isn’t so bad. I’ve shown Chris the ins and outs of trolling crank baits for walleye and it’s been going pretty well. It’s a typical June shallow, mud flat kind of bite…..probably pre- mayfly. I’ve noticed that many of the walleye I’ve cleaned have been gorging themselves on crayfish (likely molting their shells now). Boat traffic is pretty much close to non-existent but the odd one here and there.

Chris tangling with walleye…
Susanne collecting shore lunch ingredients.

We’ve also made a few trips up the creek to Clearwater…

These were “work trips” to estimate the damage to the dock ramp that the ice caused this past winter. Of course some fishing needed to occur as well…

Chris’s first ever lake trout…they can only get bigger!
Nice virus hair!

After many hours of research…

the conclusion on the ramp is that it requires a major facelift. I’m shooting for dismantling it this fall, and replacing it over the winter. Working on the ice is definitely nicer than being knee deep in the water.

The border closure, and moving forward with the virus…

It’s a strange and complicated situation. While we wait to see if we can fully open, the powers that be are incrementally inching forward 30 days at a time. The latest is to keep the border closed till July 21 and then review where to go from there. In the meantime we are allowed to be open for domestic travelers. We are not rushing to open every cabin till we know for sure what is happening….but in anticipation of something happening late in the summer we are preparing the best ways to do so. One of the big considerations are the new cleaning protocols we need to follow for safeguarding the health of our guests and cleaning staff. Bottom line is we need to leave 24 to 48 hours between when people leave and when we clean and sanitize the cabins. This has resulted in having to juggle those people who are booked for August / September to allow us this necessary spacing. Thank you for everyone’s cooperation on this. We are also doing a similar juggling for bookings in our 2021 season. Let’s hope that for 2022 we can all return to a more normal fishing scene!

How did this get here?

  1. Thanx for the great pix of Suzanne and guest…..Gord, not so much….reminds me that Ineed to get on the board again

  2. Like the wonderful inspired scenic photos. Gord is resembling a sexy Kenny Rogers that he always wanted to be. I hope the guests book all your cabins while the fishing is hot.

  3. Gord…Is it reasonable to expect the rebuild of the Clearwater ramp will include a fully functional winch that many of your guests have hoped and prayed for?

  4. Today was a sad day for me. I had to leave VBL and go earn a living. Although the camp was quiet, the fishing was good and the hosts were even better. Gord and Susanne made me feel right at home from the minute I got out of my truck. I’ll do what I can to make this a yearly go (twice if I can swing it). See you in September.

    1. Chris, it was great to get to know you this week! I’m glad you liked spending time with us at VBL. We’ll see you this fall!

  5. Our group from Arkansas will greatly miss VBL this year. The summer will not be the same without the Sunday fish fry and Gord laughing because my son always out fishes me. Hoping for next year.

  6. Sad to not be there this year, but looking forward to hopefully getting up there next year! Nice to see pics of Clearwater. Those portage boats + high winds make for a good day!

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
