We’ve just returned from the Baja in Mexico….
…..and this is what greeted us at the lodge……..
It is definitely still winter at VBL, although just a short drive west of us Kenora has very little of the white stuff. Now is the time we all start wondering about ice conditions and the such. I know we’ll have several weeks of good ice fishing conditions left, if not more.
What about the ice out contest? It’s time to put on your thinking caps, dust off the crystal ball and get your mind off the gas prices and think Spring & fishing! Rules are the same as always. Be the first to pick the exact date that Vermilion Bay is declared “ice free”, by our panel of expert judges, and you will be awarded the prestigious honor of “ice out champion”, and get your choice of any prime VBL bling that suits your fancy. Just send Gord an email (vbay@drytel.net) with your best guess. All guess’s will remain secret, so don’t be posting it in the comment section! I will as usual be posting regular updates to give you information that might be essential in your decision……or you may take the snap decision route to claim that particular date before anyone else.
I await your input, and good luck!
Here’s a few pics from south of the border (Mexican) to give you a taste of what we’ve been up to since mid January……
50 pound yellowfin tuna……
A nice yellowtail….(not a tuna)
Plenty of sun, sand, sea and cerveza….
This is a quick post to let you all know that we are back and the ice out contest has begun. I’ll be posting more details of some salt water action over the next few weeks, along with some ice fishing that we hope to be doing shortly. Till then keep the stress levels down and sharpen those hooks……the walleye, bass, musky etc. are awaiting your return.
El Gordo….although now that I have reached the ripe age of 70, I may prefer the handle “Don Gordo”……adios amigos
Ice Out at 11:11 am, on May 18.
Back to reality! Great fish pictures!

This is a first class resort located on Vermillion Bay on Eagle Lake. The cabins are very clean and well kept. The boats are new with new motors and are in great shape. The owner will also clean your fish for you after your day on the water. Make no mistake the fishing on Eagle Lake is world class.
The Lodge is owned by Gord and Susanne Bastable who will make you feel welcome and before you know it you feel like family. They are the best of hosts. The atmosphere is low key and laid back leading to a great vacation.
This is my 19th year of enjoying the hospitality of the lodge and i can’t think of going anywhere else on Eagle Lake.
