Ice Out Update #3

One month?

Rumour has it there is one month till we are “open”. I suppose that will come to pass but it really seems like winter is hanging on. Actually over the past few days a warming trend and rain has given the snow and ice a workout. The walleye season officially closed two days ago and the lake is quiet. Gulls are back and the rock is lively with their calls. The eagles have also been back for quite some time. If you recall (from a previous blog post) the eagle pair that nests behind the lodge lost their nest in the late fall. We wondered with all the snow still here how they would go about rebuilding something……..apparently no problem……

They have found a spot just up from the creek that you can actually see from the road. Hopeful this tree lasts them for many years to come!

Since the last blog post we’ve been busy getting the portage lakes ready for spring….oil changes, gas etc. Might have one last trip via atv once the lake conditions are suitable…..right now it’s a layer of slush over ice. Not fit for man or machine.

Of course some ice fishing has occurred…….

This bass will probably be spawning nearby in June.

Joe and Cal were up at their island and had some good luck…….here’s Cal with a 33″ lake trout.

Hard to tell from the photo but Joe caught a dandy while fishing by himself….31″ Walleye!

Yesterday was the day after the walleye season closed. Joe volunteered to help me flip over a few boats. It was a foggy morning and we headed into Clearwater, but might as well see what the trout are up to first.

I’m not saying we got lost in the fog but it made for sketchy navigation.

So I can count the walleye I’ve seen from Clearwater on one hand and Joe has never caught one here. It was happy to swim away……..Joe also caught a trout and a whitefish from the same hole……

Anyways, that’s a wrap for fishing, unless Susanne and I hit Clearwater one more time with the ATV’s. Here’s a shot of the lake as of today with current snow and ice conditions. If you haven’t already taken a guess as to the ice out date just shoot me an email… Gordo

While we wait for the open water season here’s an interesting video that I stumbled upon today that I thought might be of interest to VBL’ers.

Still on the fence about coming up? I have a few openings early in the season and towards September as well……give me a call!

  1. Joe almost had the Clearwater grand slam from the same hole. A pike, burbot, or Smallie would have been the icing on the cake.

This is a first class resort located on Vermillion Bay on Eagle Lake. The cabins are very clean and well kept. The boats are new with new motors and are in great shape. The owner will also clean your fish for you after your day on the water. Make no mistake the fishing on Eagle Lake is world class.

The Lodge is owned by Gord and Susanne Bastable who will make you feel welcome and before you know it you feel like family. They are the best of hosts. The atmosphere is low key and laid back leading to a great vacation.

This is my 19th year of enjoying the hospitality of the lodge and i can’t think of going anywhere else on Eagle Lake.
