Ice out update: April 20, 2014 “Happy Easter”

Is that shoreline?  Yes, actual grass and rocks!  Now that the Arctic vortex is behind us, it’s time for some spring melt…

As you can see things are looking wet and relatively snow free on the lake.  But is that actual lake ice we are walking on?  No, just a layer of frozen slush…….

Regardless, seems there is the opinion out there that the underlying ice is of “poor quality” and likely to go fast.  Now do they mean “fast” like in May, or are they talking June?  And who are “they” that know so much about this ice melt….and have they submitted their guess?

So many opinions, but who will be right?  My plan is to be on the water by May 17th….catching lake trout and walleye.  What’s your plan?

  1. My plan is to be on the water catching Lake Trout and Walleye the afternoon of May 20th! Probably need to get my ice out guess in….

  2. Gord this is precisely why you need to work on that virtual fishing business plan. Mother nature us just too unpredictable. The professor and I, for the right fee, would be happy to fish for any hesitant VBL guests and to send them video and pics that document how good the fishing was. It seems to be working for the Perchmaster?

    1. Andy…I would like to ad a note about the sumptuous meals we prepare for our virtual guests. After the trip the Perchmaster took with us, he claimed to have actually gained a little weight. And the virtual bar is complimentary and well stocked. Sadly, there were several nights last May where we had to cut the Perchmaster off after he over-indulged on Crown Royal.

  3. Hey Andy

Being that I am now called a virtual fisherman it does help the wallet a little.
    Though hurts in other ways.
I hope Dustin you won’t be ice fishing this year on the 20th.

    1. Andy, you should be following my lead and completing projects. Must I remind you of our conversation back in October. Where are you on that assignment? Here’s the post in question to refresh your memory….

“Andy, due to your interest in coming up with some innovative VBL swag, I hereby appoint you as “Swag Master”. Your mission…..come up with the item, the design and at a price we can hope to sell at least two (you and the professor). I look forward to your acceptance, and an item so irresistible, I will be able to market them on line, from the comfort of my couch….

…by the way, the idea of a fishing tie isn’t bad….especially with a built in ruler. It could double as a “dew rag” in the case of the professor, or he may choose to wear it stylishly wrapped around his upper thigh…….”

On behalf of the Boyes Group, I would like to pass on our sincere thanks for hosting the Muskie Madness Week and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at VBL and had a great time!! This was our 7th year on Eagle Lake and we have stayed at a few other lodges but VBL takes the cake hands down! You can definitely count us in for next year. I’m happy to see you post some of my pics, they turned out well. Thanks again Gord for a wonderful week of fishing and your stellar hospitality, you run a first class operation, we look forward to seeing you next year!
