Musky Madness Week, 2013

Congratulations to Jay Freeburn, with his 41” musky caught on the first day of the contest.  While seven other muskies were caught, none could top the bar set by Jay.  Jay is the lucky winner of a custom made musky rod from long time guest Brad Walker at Teal River Rods, plus a hand carved trophy by Toronto artist Charles Weiss.  Jay will be the only Thunder Bay, Ontario musky hunter with a Teal River rod…..all others, be prepared to be jealous!

Here I am presenting the rod and trophy to Jay.  Unfortunately, Jay had left camp 3 days previously!  No doubt that is why I have the “unsatisfied handshake” going on…..

…other participants were on-site for the fabulous prizes at the Thursday night awards and pot=luck dinner.  Note the limited edition (not for sale) VBL fishing towel.  The winner chooses to remain anonymous.

Some of the fun activities of the night included awards to the “person having the most to drink”…..well, actually, a hook out tool for Dave who released a 38 inch pike.  Use it often Dave………

Some of the Boyes group hurl insults at the Master of Ceremonies….that’s me.  Fortunately, I was  able to calm them with a promise of some home made chocolate cake, courtesy of Brenda!  Of course, they may have been smarting from the “beating” I laid on them at the Wednesday night shuffleboard tournament at the Bay-view Hotel.  Yours truly, was the winner for the second year in a row.  Note to self:  thankfully I was able to replace that ugly fish picture next to the fireplace with a nice loon painting courtesy of Chuck Reynolds….a guest this week who drove the distance from S. Carolina.

Thanks again to everyone who participated.  Tracy at the Bayview Hotel.  Brad for the great rod and Chuck for the trophy.  Norm and Ken for the fresh sweet corn…..and the rest of the VBL gang for doing what you do best……Fishing, Relaxing and Unwinding   …..well, o.k. there was some drinking and smoking stogies going on too.   See you all next September….

    1. Kurt,

It is very unfortunate that you were unable to claim your 2014 VBL welcome package. They were most impressive. The professor has been known to sleep with his custom, limited edition, VBL towel. Perhaps, one day, he might be willing to part with that? There is rumor of a much larger musky caught by the professor and I am hoping that the towel might make an appearance in that phantom blog post?

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
