Ice Out 2024: Update #2

Ice fishing report

The picture above is from yesterday. After a week of ice fishing the ice conditions are changing by the hour…….time to put away the gear!

Susanne and I probably did more ice fishing this past week than we’ve done in the past 2 years. Of course spending 2 1/2 months in Mexico somewhat limits the ice time available. In terms of weather, ice conditions and travel on the lake it was perfect. We fished on Eagle and Clearwater and pretty much covered all the bases in terms of fish species……walleye, pike, bass, lake trout, whitefish and burbot. Here’s a photo summary of what went on…..

Bass are not a species I usually associate with ice fishing, but for some reason this spot produced a number of them!

The pike were big and chunky….

You never know what you’ll catch on Eagle Lake! This trout was probably the highlight for Susanne. It’s a big one that almost spooled her a few times! Caught while fishing for walleye, it was released healthy to carry on roaming the lake. While we didn’t measure it I’m guessing 36 inches……..

So back to the ice conditions….

If you’re thinking there’s a lot more shoreline than water you are correct. We need some rain to get the lake levels back up! In terms of ice here’s what it looks like currently. If you haven’t sent in a guess yet time is running out. Let’s hear from you!

Stay tuned for the next update….

  1. Well here in the peoples republik of Illinois, it’s sunny & ~70 (f).. Opened the pool yesterday. Let’s hope you get some rain soon!! I can’t imagine the creek being any shallower than last year! Do you know anyone with a long reach excavator? Or a dredge maybe?

  2. Hey, Susanne, Nice tangle of burbot. Gord now your thumb is going to smell like small mouth bass!?
