Ice out update #1

So I think it was April 2nd last year when I posted the first update…….basically the same timeframe this year. I thought last year was pretty snow-packed but this year seems twice as “bad”….that’s depending on whether you see the benefit of lots of spring run-off to bring the lake levels up. That’s my perception, but a new six inches on the ground this morning is really pushing it…..with more later in the week.

Lakeside view of the “senior’s condo” in progress next door.

Speaking of condos…..a view from the condo we stay in down in the Baja. Sunrise on the Sea of Cortez with horse traffic on the beach. People have asked me if I wish I was back in Mexico…….it was time to come home. Others may disagree!

While on the topic of the Baja, here’s a few more pics of our adventures (cause everyone loves your neighbor’s vacation slide show!)……

Chuy our super-panga captain. “What do we do today?”

Not far to some rooster fish….and some sierra mackerel.

On my last post someone made the comment that the water color fish pic looked like AI………correct but based on the real picture.

You know you’ve been to this place before when the bartender is sporting a VBL shirt. Leo at the Playa del Sol palapa bar. Many hours are spent here………

When you think a spinning rod is the right thing to do for tuna…………

…be prepared for an hour long battle in the sun while your fishing partners sit back in the shade cracking open some cold cervezas. Scott with a 40 plus pound yellowfin tuna.

Speaking of cerveza, it’s a popular pastime as witnessed by the “tower of power” at the local grocery store…..

Susanne’s brother John and his son Rick spent a week……along with Susanne’s mom Gerda (90 years young!)……….shown here bonding at a local watering hole.

Gert pounding back the beers……

We did fish of course…..a nice colored dorado.

….and a tasty pompano.

Some of the local Baja four legged friends…

We did our public service at a couple of the spay and neuter clinics. My job was the “assistant to the genital shaver”…….

This big boy apparently didn’t mind getting his balls shaved……or was it the drugs?

So one last “farewell to the Baja” shot, and back on the mesmerizing topic of ICE OUT.

Hopefully the photo update on current conditions will give you some guidance if you haven’t already put in your guess. Remember guesses need to be send via email to El Gordo and all guesses are kept secret till the winner is announced. While it seems that open water and fishing will never arrive, be confident that things are going to move fast over the next few weeks. Our goal is to hit the ice fishing trail soon, so I’ll be posting some fishing pics in the next ice out update……stay tuned!

  1. Hey. GORD and SUSANNE
Looks like good times in really sunny south Mexico way. My Guess is The ice and Snow will reluctantly leave Northwestern Ontario.
All the best from Nova Scotia

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
