A Kinder, More Gentle Professor?

Feedback from readers of this blog have caused me to rethink my basic nature. A few comments really shook me up, these in particular:  Tom said, “Why do you always have to make fun of others?” Janine said, “Would it hurt you to be more respectful of  the lodge owners?”  Alice said, “I’m getting very tired of this constant verbal jousting.” Drog said, “Mind your own business when it comes to my drinking habits and underwear!”

Frankly, I’m now feeling dazed and confused. But, I’m going to try to turn around what seems to be misguided behavior into something good. So, here goes.

Pictured above is bounty from Clearwater Lake. These were caught by the missus and I along with our friends , Carla and Dale (on the right). This outing took on a bit of an expedition feel because of low water causing wet feet and lots of pulling and pushing the boats to secure them on shore. It took the four of us to manage the grunt work, but everyone did this with a smile on their face.  Carla provided real encouragement by promising us fresh cheesecake, which helped our team gel.

The lakers and whitefish were mesmerized by our jigging techniques and the pike, bless them, felt compelled to eat deep-diving Rapalas that we trolled. Dale got a nice smallie to boot. We enjoyed a perfectly wonderful lunch together and then got back to fishing. The comradary was a joy to behold as we finished our day on Clearwater with a short, but stirring  acknowledgment made to the fish gods, thanking them for their support and blessings. Dale did this on behalf of the group. It was so beautiful that we all shed a tear or two. Then we began our return to the friendly confines of VBL.

The missus and I also chased after those walleyes that frequent the very close to home waters of VBL. All we had to do was get out into about 33-38 feet of water and then find them on our sonar unit. Nightcrawler spinner harnesses on a bottom-bouncer were irresistible to these fish. We caught many dozens, keeping six to take home for some very tasty fish sammys or tacos.

Ah, life was good at VBL. We met up with other guest we knew and met some new folks. I felt like I was among the “beautiful people”. Together, we enjoyed some fine meals, scintillating conversation, and friendship while surrounded by the beauty of NW Ontario.

Let me close by acknowledging the owners of VBL, Gord and Susanne. These folks are positively charming and delightful. I would be surprised if in all of Canada there is a couple nicer than these two. Well, there you have it– my first attempt at presenting a kinder, more gentle presence on the blog. In all honesty, I can’t say that I feel better about this, but at least I’m trying to be the kind of  blogger that you would trust with your kids. As always, your feedback is deeply appreciated.

Testimonials

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
