First fish since June?

Personally, I can’t get enough of Scott’s June fishing report. However, I thought I would share some video’s from my last trip in August. It was kind of the trip that wasn’t meant to be. I had a number of familiar suspects who all cancelled on this trip. What to do? My wife Pam used to fish with me, many decades ago. I had tried to convince her to go on a trip to VBL for many years, but she really didn’t want to go. She had a change of heart, and the trip exceeded her expectations. We ended up cutting the trip short a little bit for a funeral, but I will be back up with the Professor for the Musky Madness gala event. For this trip, I decided to borrow my daughter’s GoPro camera, and came up with some decent short clips. I will try a few more under-water video’s in September. It was sometimes a bit of a challenge managing both the net, my line, and the camera and may go with a rod or boat mount on the next trip. Excuse the french in a few of these videos. It was also a little nerve racking sticking the camera in the water.

For the record, the fish above was not mine. This one wore Pam out and came on a day when we caught at least two dozen nice pike. The action can be seen here:

We had a lot of wind and rain during our stay, but on this day the water was like glass. That’s a great time to go pester the trout and whitefish. On this day, the fishing was literally non-stop.

Jigging for Lake Trout

We kept Gord busy in the fish house that day.

A sink full of perch would have brought me more pleasure.

Gord attacks the pile of fish with his typical enthusiasm:

While we kept some eaters, many fish lived to swim another day…

We also had a few quick releases. Here is a good tutorial on how not to net a fish:

A little under water perspective:

The hot bait for pike (Out-fished other colors 4-1) was a clown flash tail dancer. The pike were slamming schools of perch along a  25′ drop off. When my only bait in that color broke in the net, I learned a lesson about how these baits are constructed. Shocking to say the least.

I can’t wait for September!

  1. Andy…I was shocked to learn that your wife got tired of catching nice pike. Do you think she may be suffering from iron-poor blood?
