Winter at VBL…are these the doldrums?

It’s winter at VBL and some blog readers have recently wondered about the lack of activity on the “Electric Beaver”.  Have I been buried in a snow drift?  Am I permanently on a winter hiatus?  Perhaps the “call of the couch” has been particularly strong this winter?  All of the above…..and none of the above.  The bottom line is muscle memory.  The longer something remains inactive, the harder it is to get it working again.

Long time guest Joe Posont recently booked his trip for opening week (May 20th) and commented that many guests are likely missing these updates.  He had a good suggestion.  Why not schedule a post every Sunday?  I like that idea.  Knowing that something needs to be done on a certain day will help to keep things moving.  I accept Joe’s challenge, and even though this is a Monday post I will strive to put something out, at a minimum, on a weekly basis.   Time to end the winter doldrums.  Spring is coming!

To start things off I thought why not post some photos of what Susanne and I have been up to..

Our first ice fishing outing…Dinner!

As usual, a snowy February.

The barrel sauna gets a workout in the winter months!

The dogs and Gord get a workout on the snowshoe trails….Susanne, the task master.

For those of you who may be wondering if any actual work gets done over the winter…of course!  You may or may not have noticed that the VBL website has been redone.  If you are reading this, then you might notice that the new website and the blog site are now one and the same.  Check it out.

Yesterday I shoveled my way into cabin #5 and emptied out the bedrooms.  Today some demolition will take place as a precursor to the eventual renovation process.  Stay tuned for some updates as this moves ahead!

In an effort to end the winter doldrums and put you into a “summer, fishing kind of mood” I offer you this image from last year.

Blog Update:  After many (several) rude comments about previous sauna photos, I submit, for your viewing pleasure, my second favorite sauna image……..

  1. I very much like the idea of a regular Sunday update. We were all getting a little worried about you. I am sure Kurt was disappointed that there was no picture of you out in front of the sauna in your usual attire.

  2. Since you have many renovations taking place in camp, when will the yoga gym be finished. You know that is a great way to Relax and Unwind after a day of fishing.

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
