The Freeze……..

What a strange season this has been. Ice out was possibly the latest on record and now we are well into November and the lake has been pretty much ice free. The above photo was from yesterday, Tuesday, November 23rd. Vermilion Bay is basically ice free except for some weed edges and the creek. What you can’t see from this shot is that some of the bays (Meyers, Waldhof) are frozen (which is the normal progression of things). It has been cold and my motivation for taking the shot was that I did not think it could last much longer.

Even the bald eagles were still in their old haunts…….probably wishing their gull buddies were still keeping them company. The northern duck flocks have pretty much headed south, but there are plenty of deer carcasses to feed on!

The next day things have changed……this is Wednesday, November 24th. During the late afternoon yesterday, and overnight we have this nice hard surface which has developed. The fish population can now kick back and relax for a few weeks, snug in their water beds. Time to contemplate ice fishing……………….

  1. Nice post Gord.. You better think hard about hitting the hardwater early you can probably find some GREAT fishing if you give it a try.
Always like post like this during the off season.
    Keep em coming..

  2. This looks a little chilly. The professor and I are planning on breaking in his new boat chasing monster brown trout on the big pond this weekend. Im going to try to explain to him that when you break in a boat you don't actually have to ruin the prop. Im hoping it wont be as chilly as vbl as the professor can get a little testy when his rubber hand freezes up.

  3. Looking at the forecast his rubber is going to freeze Andy!!!!
Good Luck on the big pond…
Guess I lost my invite somewhere!!!!

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
