Eagle Lake Ice Out Update

It's beginning to look a lot like spring!
Cloudy morning on a frozen Eagle Lake

The progression of the Eagle Lake ice out continues.  As it melts back from shore and turns black one can only speculate what will eventually cause it to leave.  A slow melt with warming temperatures?  A quick demise with strong winds or rain?  Your guess is as good as mine!

What happens after the Eagle Lake ice out?

One observation.  Water levels are quite high and things are looking good for some great fishing opening week.  Access into Clearwater Lake and other portage lakes should be easy.  Once again the MNR has asked Vermilion Bay Lodge to catch some  lake trout from Eagle Lake for their tagging studies.  A tough job, but someone has to do it!

  1. From the looks of it I am guessing ice will be gone by the end of the week-end?
Or is it deceiving from the picture?
I was really hoping for a May 11th or so ice out so those pesky lake trout would be very active in the shallows, which they should be.

    1. Well Terry, it is supposed to get cooler this weekend, but rain as well. Not sure if it bodes well for the 18th, but stranger things have happened.

  2. So much for April 28th ice out Gord. So psycho might be right. Oh well, It at least looks like it’s disappearing although this weekend is getting cold again. See you soon Garlic Ring Man.

  3. 18th would be a long shot looking at Gords pics but I am hoping for around the 10th that should make for some awesome fishing this year along with those higher water levels…

  4. We had some wind from the south today and some ice has started piling up on the Gull Rock. Rain in the forecast tomorrow. Rain and wind could really get things going!

Hey, when are you guys going to upload an image of yourself so we don’t have to see the “G” on it’s side next to your comment?

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
