March Ice Fishing……the last hurrah!

March fishing can be some of the best, but it also signals the end of winter ice fishing.  Seems this year Mother Nature is determined to punish us with a pendulum of temperature extremes…warm, cold, rain, snow.  At least the howling wind is a constant!  Here’s a sampling of what’s been going on here the past few weeks.

During this time of year the local Kinsmen run special events over the weekend.  As usual the ice fishing derby was cold and windy.  Held in front of the government dock the quest is to catch and release the “heaviest” fish.  The Bratland boys (my neighbor) cleaned up with first and second place by having a hot perch hole.  Here they proudly hold up their winnings……$450 in total!

The rest of us below average anglers must be content with some of the door prizes.  Here I wave my new knife at Susanne with her candles and dog toys.

What’s coming up?

I will soon be announcing the annual ice out contest.  Use the intervening days to ruminate over your strategy to win.  Pick early and take a wild stab at the date?  Or bide your time, keeping your finger on the pulse of the conditions until ready to strike………alas, you waited too long and someone else scooped your date!  Don’t send in your guesses yet.  The contest opens when I give the word.

Stay tuned for the latest edition of the “Chris and Nick” ice fishing adventure that just concluded.  It was an unusual year, and I’ve teased you with a few pictures in this post.  The full version coming soon…….

  1. Well that is what I like to see some ice fishing picture from VBL
Don’t like seeing no snow on that ice. Sure hope some snowstorms are on the way
By the way what time is the walleye dinner?

  2. It was nice of Susanne to lend you her trout for the photo opportunity. How much are you charging for these virtual fishing trips?

    1. Andy……you must have missed the section on the Packages page that has the “Virtual Fishing Package Plan”. Kurt has been on that package for years now…..living vicariously through actual fishermen. I’m surprised he is actually coming out of retirement to wet a line. I suppose the draw of the Perch Rodeo contest is too much for him. Unfortunately for him, Paul Fulka, winner the past two years is coming back in July to cement his hat trick. I also know that you are gunning for the honor as well……….I’m thinking the competition is going to be stiff.

    1. Please….no weenie pictures in the cabins. !!!!!! Sauna pictures already leave too much to the imagination….wrinkled and shriveled up stuff….yikes !!!!!!

  3. Gord’s ice fishing expertise with a Pocket Fisherman is growing to “almost” epic and prolific proportions………..from a casting standpoint that is. Center the bait over the hole and push the button………..

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
