May 27-June 3, Fishing Report

Weather bad—-Fishing good. That pretty much sums it up…

Rain, wind, cold, sun, high water and a bonus hatch of blackflies sums up the past week. Through it all good times were had by all and some exceptional catches. The fishing is just starting to heat up…bigger walleye seem to be more active as the water warms. The shallow trout bite was very good…..how long it will last is up to our next anglers who start arriving tomorrow. Here’s a photo log of the past week…

The biggest walleye of the week, 28 inches, caught today by Mara Natkin (held by her dad). Caught on a crank bait trolling.
A young musky caught later in the day on a minnow…..
Not all the fish are big though……
Back on the portage lakes the trout were active…
A very nice 28 incher released by Noelle Swanson.
A whitefish caught trolling……Al and Kathy.
…and then a walleye…same spot.
The water levels are nuts! A temporary floating dock to get to the floating dock…
On the back woods adventure…a nice walleye but a bit beat up…by what? A monster…
A chunky Eagle Lake bass…..
Some happy boys this week, despite the weather!
It’s a good one……
…and on “the board”. 33 inch laker released. Way to go!
Future VBLer’s
41 inch pike up the creek…
Mouth to mouth…

Out with the guide…
Getting ready to go home…

So it was a good week…

The upcoming weather seems to be an improvement and hopefully water levels will come down. On a positive note we are able to resume our Sunday night fish fry this week as our whitefish supplier is back in operation after some flooding in his fish house. Good news! Stay tuned for the follow week’s update!

  1. Gord, thanks for a great week. The fishing was only surpassed by the hospitality. And who knew you were such a burger chef (although looking forward to fish fry next spring – the boys are already making plans…)!

If you’re looking for an outstanding vacation spot for the serious fisherman or a family get away you should consider Vermillion Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake, Ontario Canada. We have stayed at many lake resorts over the years, but none offer the simple pleasures of this one. The lake is large enough and holds enough fish for the most adventuresome fisherman and yet easy for local family fishing for young children. Bring your own boat or use one of the aluminum boats (20 hp) at the lodge. Boat dockage is well protected from the wind and allows easy access to the water.

What sets this lodge apart from most others is it is always clean, well kept with lots to do including paddle boats canoes, bon fires in the evenings and a just plain friendly atmosphere.
