The VBL Challenge

Sometimes the fishing is so good at VBL that one has to find other ways to amuse ones self.

Last August was one of those years. My son-in-law Brian joined us on the trip and brought along a Popeil Pocket Fisherman as a potential gag birthday gift for someone in our group. One day after dinner and just before dark, we decided to put it to the test. Beer may or may not have been involved. See this entertaining video:

So the question this year is, what prop do I bring to again affirm that it doesn’t take much to catch big walleyes at VBL?  I am thinking snoopy pole, cane pole, stick and line….This is your chance to influence the final decisions. Here are some images to get your creative juices going….

  1. Normally, 28′ of line would be about right. Of course next you are going to challenge me to catch fish where there are no fish or to fish trout in August in 5′ of water? I think this is simply a hint by Gord about where you should be fishing in August?

  2. Hi Andy…As you have demonstrated many times over, there are many options for catching nice walleyes on Eagle Lake. Bringing another “prop” to do so is a meaningless gimmick at this point. I say forget this idea and create a real challenge. I suggest you go after a trophy muskie using the “Belinski Bait”. It can be trolled in the deeper waters of Vermilion Bay or you can fish it under a big bobber close to the VBL beach area.

    1. Professor,

I will have to check to see if Gord is willing to donate one of his big toes for bait because Charles’ bait is selling like hot cakes after he broke the ice. I do plan on breaking in a virgin St. Croix Rod on a big fellow. It’s one of those pretty blue rods you like so much but stands tall at 8′ 6″ (A Christmas present from my daughter). It’s paired with a nice Revo Winch and is in need of a scuffle and recommendation for line. I think Gord has retired from musky fishing so maybe Brad or someone else could add to the line recommendations?

If you like GREAT fishing, hospitality and affordability, Vermilion Bay Lodge is highly recommended. I have been making the trip to Vermilion Bay Lodge for the past 10 years and have never once been disappointed. If you like great walleye, northern, musky and trout fishing, this place should not be overlooked. The fishing has been excellent… no matter what time we went. Gordy and Susanne are wonderful hosts that will make you feel right at home. Check it out – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
